The University of Bolton was one of the first in the country to offer games-based courses and our experience covers games programming, games design and games art. We have over 11 years experience in the delivery of dedicated games courses. We have a large number of staff who are passionate about games and dedicated to teaching the subject. Our team includes a balance of academic and industrial experience. Members of the team have worked in AAA studios, have run their own studios, have authored books and are conducting international-facing research. The programme covers games analysis and games design, platforms and technologies, content production, testing, usability and playability, sales and marketing, and games production. It provides a broad study of games, with an emphasis on innovation, design and creativity rather than the programming and technical aspects. The focus is team-based projects, with regular critique sessions with your peers and members of the games team. You will be taught by enthusiastic staff who actually play games! In addition, our staff include industry experts who know exactly what is required for a career in games design. Our facilities include dedicated games labs including quad processor PCs installed with current games development environments, state-of-the-art 3D graphics cards, XBOX 360s and Playstation 3s ensuring you have access to the tools you need to create a high quality portfolio of work ready to impress potential employers.
Design, create and market computer games. As a TIGA-affiliated and CompTIA Academy degree, this course is recognised by the industry’s trade associations. You’ll visit international games events and present your work to industry professionals.
The course covers the creative aspects of games design and development and provides opportunities for you to specialise in more complex aspects of game and level design or games art at later stages of the course. You’ll be supported in developing, designing, planning and creating game ideas and concepts. You’ll also have the opportunity to produce and integrate artwork and graphical assets for computer games. We introduce current issues and ideas and emerging technologies used by the games industry throughout the course. The games courses benefit from our industry partnerships and we run an active programme of industry guest speakers. Previous speakers have included art directors, animators, illustrators and designers who work freelance and from companies including Rockstar, Formerdroid and Realtime UK. This course offers you the chance to spend a year working in industry and we have a Placement Unit team that can support you in your search for a placement position. The University also has a number of placement positions are available in our in-house games development studio to help facilitate this. Our ‘Canalside Studios’ gives placement students the opportunity to work as part of a team developing games for a range of platforms including Xbox Live Arcade, iPhone and Android. Past students have also developed software with the NHS, The Royal Armouries and the West Yorkshire Fire Service. Alternatively, if you are a student from within the UK or the EU, you could consider starting your own small business by applying for the Enterprise Placement Year in conjunction with the University’s Enterprise Team.
You will study games design and explore the professional skills necessary to pursue employment in the Games industry. You will study in MediaCity and engage in work based experience relevant to your programme of study.The qualification is aimed at those who wish to pursue freelance work or employment in a range of careers in the games design industry. Foundation degrees are a good stepping stone for students who wish to pursue BA (Hons) Degree qualifications. On completion of the foundation degree students can apply for direct entry into year 3 (or if studied part-time, level 6) of a computing and games design (or related) degree or a BA top up programme.
